“Selekta” is a guarantee of success
August … The last month of summer. Noon. The sun is at its zenith. The air temperature in the shade exceeds 35°C. In the Steppe there is an incredible heat. At the testing ground of the LLC Scientific and Production Commercial Firm “Selekta”, where all the hybrids of maize created by the scientists for almost two decades of painstaking work are presented on the demonstration plots, an excursion for the Day of Field participants was held.
It was at this time that the enterprise traditionally holds this event in order to familiarize the agrarians with their achievements and visually show the results of the work. And to show is that!
The chief agronomist and leading breeder of the Company Vitalii Melnik in detail acquaints the agrarians with the economic and biological characteristics of the hybrids, answers the numerous questions of the guests. Among the key words that are most often repeated in his informative lecture under the scorching August sun, two can be distinguished: “drought -resistance” and “heat – resistance”.
It was on this hot August day that I realized that 2015 could probably be the date for a new climatic epoch, which will also be characterized by two key words: “hot” and “dry”.
Once, now in the distant 1992, I read an article by the Ukrainian archaeologist, Professor of the Kiev-Mohyla Academy Nikolai Chmykhov “Eight millennia of archeological cosmology in Ukraine”. N.A. Chmykhov, unfortunately, left this world two years later at the age of forty. He explored historical epochs, observed their connection with the natural and climatic periods and synchronized the historical processes of Southeast Europe and the Middle East. The scientist came to the conclusion that all the ethnoses that existed for eight millennia in the territory of modern Ukraine and the Middle East synchronously co-existed within the framework of the then natural and climatic periods.
According to N. Chmykhov, the modern climatic epoch called Holocene lasts approximately 10,000 years. The new climatic and new historical epoch in the life of mankind must replace it. It should start after 2015. Nikolai Alexandrovich predicted that the climate on our planet would become hot and dry. The scientist predicted global social cataclysms at the turn of the climatic and historical epochs and urged the then leadership of an independent Ukraine to prepare for these negative challenges.
As we can see, the scientific forecast of N. Chmykhov on our territory and the territory of the Middle East, unfortunately, is coming true, and today our country, and the whole world, faces challenges that the mankind did not know before. It is clear that changing of climatic conditions, much less changing them for the worse, will lead to a deterioration in the quality of life of people on the whole planet.
Food security is one of the main pillars of the welfare of the people and the existence of the state. Ukraine is just among those states on the planet Earth that are able to provide themselves with foodstuffs and offer a significant portion of various products to the world.
For successful conduct of agrarian business, it is necessary to involve the whole range of achievements of agrarian science and technology and clearly build a strategy for the development of plant growing, since it is the basis on which the historical progress of mankind is taking place.
A small seed is the guarantee of our existence and well-being. It is this, the grain, which is the alpha and omega of our being. To ensure that the grain not only sprouted and delighted our eyes, but also gave high yields and significant profits, of course, we need a reliable agrarian company that would have modern production and scientific potential, and would be a reliable partner and an assistant to agricultural producers.
It is this company that is the Limited liability company, the Scientific and Production Commercial Firm “Selekta”, headed by the General Director Vladimir Fyodorovich Moskalenko. Almost two decades the enterprise works in the field of selection and seed production of corn and is the leader in the market of Ukraine and Belorussia. The founders of the company “Selekta” are the scientists of the former All-Union Research Institute of Maize, and now the Institute of Agriculture of the Steppe Zone of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Speaking to the participants of the Day of Field, the general director of the Company “Selekta’, Vladimir Fedorovich Moskalenko, stressed that the main task of the team of breeders -scientists is to find new directions in selection and creation highly productive maize hybrids that are well adapted to the current extremely dry conditions of growing, have a low harvest moisture and valuable economic qualities.
The management of the company “Selekta” is clearly aware of the negative challenges that Mother Nature poses to us and is working to create new hybrids of the “Queen of fields”, which ensure a high yield potential of this important grain crop for the country’s food supply in adverse natural and climatic conditions.
The LLC Scientific and Production Commercial Firm “Selekta” works on four general directions of selection with the purpose of creation of new hybrids of maize. The main agronomist of the enterprise V. Ya. Melnik gave a detailed account of the work carried out by scientists and production workers to perform the tasks assigned.
The first direction of the work of plant selection concerns those hybrids that agrarians use for afterharvest crops in the southern zone of the country. This group of hybrids is characterized by such qualities as early growth and drought – resistance. By the way, these hybrids were widely used in the steppe zone of Ukraine during the Soviet period.
The second direction of selection is associated with the creation of early-ripening and middle-early ripening hybrids, characterized by the rapid growth rate and accelerated loss of moisture by grain. These hybrids are used in the northern regions of Ukraine and in Belorussia to grow maize for grain and silage. In the silage mass of these hybrids, the share of grain is about 50%. According to biomass, the share of grain relative to the cormophyte mass reaches a ratio of 1: 2. Thanks to the introduction of hybrids of this group, in Republic of Belorussia, over the years of independence, there has been an increase in the number of horned cattle.
The third direction of the work provides for the creation of high-yielding maize hybrids that combine high drought – resistance and rapid loss moisture of grain during maturation. They are suitable for all zones of Ukraine. A characteristic feature of the hybrids of this group is the indicator – the stem is green, and the ear is dry. Thanks to this indicator, the plant can give full grain in hard conditions of drought. These hybrids are also resistant to lodging.
The fourth direction of the work of breeders can be called archimportant, because it is connected with the deterioration of climatic conditions for farming in the Ukraine. They are characterized by such negative factors: too high temperatures, prolonged absence of precipitation, which ultimately leads to the severe drought.
The scientists of Company “Selekta” are working to create super drought-resistant hybrids, to obtain the highest possible and guaranteed yields in the Steppe zone of the Ukraine.
This group includes middle-ripening hybrids and middle-late ripening hybrids, which in severe climatic conditions form the full-fledged ear and provide high yields and fully utilize the vegetative period. This process is due to the selection of drought-resistant lines.
The chief agronomist and the leading breeder of the firm “Selekta” V.Ya. Melnik has been working for forty years to create drought-resistant hybrids. In his opinion, it is because of the severe arid weather conditions prevailing in recent years that breeders can and should create hybrids that would be produced the stable yields even in more negative climatic conditions. This is the requirement of time, and it is necessary to work on this in order to get a positive result.
The enterprise “Selekta” fruitfully cooperates with the Polesskyi Institute of Plant Growing of the Republic of Belorussia, which is headed by L.P. Shimanskyi. As a result of 15-year close cooperation with Belorussiaian colleagues in 2015 about 70% of corn sowings in the Republic of Belorussia were occupied by hybrids of the company “Selekta”.
From 1 200 000 hectare of maize sown areas in the Republic of Belorussia on 30 percent are occupied by middle-early ripening hybrids of Lyuvena and Poltava, and 10 percent by hybrid MEL 272 MV.
Twenty-five percent of corn fields of the Republic of Belorussia are sown with their own hybrids and five percent are seeded by hybrids of the European producers. During the years of independence, the number of horned cattle in Belorussia increased by 20 percent.
Undoubtedly, this is the merit of the breeders of the Company “Selekta”, because thanks to corn, as the Belorussiaian agrarians say, they managed to solve the problem of animal husbandry providing with feeds.
This year the enterprise began to cooperate with the agrarians of the Republic of
Azerbaijan. Hybrids of the first generation Poltava and TAP 349 MV are tested in the fields of this Transcaucasian republic. Breeders of the Company “Selekta” are waiting for the test results. Of course, further cooperation will depend on what they will be like.
Employees of the Company “Selekta” supports business working contacts with breeders of the European Union, with whom maize hybrids are exchanged for further study in different climatic conditions. Let’s note that the Company “Selekta” has 24 testing areas all over the country – from Odessa to Chernigov.
The results of the tests showed that foreign hybrids on the drought-resistant in the conditions of the Steppe are losing to domestic hybrids and do not give the yield that is on the fields of Europe and North America. These hybrids can be grown in the northern regions of Ukraine, where the natural conditions are not as harsh as in the Steppe. This conclusion was made by the scientists of Company “Selekta”.
We draw attention to the fact that one seed unit (1 ha) of hybrids of the Firm “Selekta” costs up to 600 UAH for agrarians, and foreign firms – more than 3,000 UAH, while the effect in drying regions is opposite. Hybrids of the maize of the Company “Selekta” in arid conditions exceed by productivity the hybrids of foreign firms by 50 percent.
Below, we give the floor to the agrarians, who took part in the Day of Field on August 12, 2015. Their opinions should be listened to, as they have seen on their own many years of experience that the hybrids of maize of LLC Scientific and Production Commercial Firm “Selekta” successfully meets competition with similar products of world leaders in the field of selection and seed production.
Executive Director of the Association “Ukrainian Seed Society” Oleg Mikhailovich Isichko in a conversation with us said that hybrids of the company “Selekta” can be grown in all zones of agriculture of Ukraine and Belorussia. For each zone, grain producers can choose the hybrid they need, which will give the best result on their lands. Those farms that use the seeds of Company “Selekta” are buying their hybrids from year to year, because they have the great yield potential and the high level of drought – resistance, which indicates good selection.
Oleg Isichko drew our attention to the fact that the remontant hybrids of corn are green, despite the drought, and this indicates that the plants continue vegetation in such harsh weather conditions. At the same time, the plants of foreign hybrids of corn were yellow at other testing areas of the Company “Selekta”. The Executive Director noted the fact that 50% of the domestic maize selection is concentrated in the Dnepropetrovsk region of Ukraine and our region has a significant potential for further development of selection and seed production of this agricultural crop, important for the country’s food supply.
Among the permanent partners of Firm “Selekta”: Limited liability company “Promin-Lan” (Poltava region), Farm “Grant” (Tsarichanskyi District), Farm “Anastasia” (Sinelnikovskyi district) and many others.
We also heard the good word about cooperation with Company “Selekta” from the management of LLC “Promin-Lan” (Poltava region) – the director Alexei Andreevich Bryzha and the main agronomist Vladimir Vasilievich Vakulich. Eighty percent of the sown area of corn in their farm is occupied by hybrids of the Company “Selekta”. The farm has a herd of horned cattle, so 450 hectares of land is planted with maize, grown for silage. Within five years, the hybrid Lyuvena of the Company “Selekta” gives yields higher than the hybrids of overseas companies.
The head of the farm “Grant” (Tsarichanskyi district) Yurii Vasilievich Bovt has been cooperating with the Firm “Selekta” for several years. The company’s hybrids, he assures, are not inferior to foreign analogues. Andrei Petrovich Usov, who heads the farm “Anastasia” (Sinelnikovskyi district), confirms his colleague’s words that he is fully satisfied with the quality of the hybrids and the pricing policy of the Company “Selekta”.
The representative of the Company “Selekta” in the Kharkov region Pavel Stupka, who has long been familiar with the selective achievements of the Company “Selekta”, noted that the high yield of corn at a reasonable seed price allows him to successfully promote the company’s products in Slobozhanshchina.
On Day of Field we communicated with many agrarians of Dnepropetrovsk region and other regions of Ukraine. All of them said that the Company “Selekta” is a reliable and conscientious partner. In a word, such a partner that helps to develop the economy and improve business. But the fate of each agricultural enterprise depends on the real incomes that the land gives. Cooperation with Company “Selekta” always guarantees success.
